There is a debate among those involved in the publishing world about who we are in the process of creating content. Are we stewards of the content or the form? There is an idea that you can only have one or the other (a good friend of mine and I were talking about this over breakfast), and I believe he is right for the most part.
If you create a magazine or a book, the question becomes: Is the content specific to that medium or form, or does it live on through digital mediums, through excerpts scattered about the web like a kaleidoscope of free verse poetry and scavenged haiku? When giants like Newsweek bow out of the printed end of the publishing world, we are struck by the realization of what this dichotomy might mean.
Empirical is dedicated to having the rich voices and narratives in the magazine live on through blog postings, digital copies, and word-of-mouth. It is important in a world where information is traded so simply that we maintain a presence and pace with the thrusts of technology.
In the coming weeks and months, you will have the opportunity to interact with the wonderful fiction, articles, and poetry that fills our magazine for the first time (or, hopefully, the second or third time if you have subscribed or purchased an issue).
